چکیده

In this paper, “innovative intelligence–biased technological change” (IIBTC) is examined as an alternative to the traditional concept of skill-biased technological change (SBTC) as a source of increases in wage inequality. The innovative intelligence of ordinary or average workers is an important element in productivity and can be heterogeneous across workers. Because technologies are heterogeneous in that they have different characteristics and are used in different situations, some technologies are “innovative intelligence-biased” and are advantageous for workers with relatively high innovative intelligence. If IIBTC prevails over a certain period of time, these workers become additionally advantaged and thereby wage inequality will increase during the period. JEL Classification: D24, D63, J31

Skill-Biased Technological Change and Rising Wage Inequality: Some Problems and Puzzles

The recent rise in wage inequality is usually attributed to skill-biased technical change (SBTC), associated with new computer technologies. We review the evidence for this hypothesis, focusing on the implications of SBTC for overall wage inequality and for changes in wage differentials between groups. A key problem for the SBTC hypothesis is that wage inequality stabilized in the 1990s despite...

Earnings Inequality and Skill-biased Technological Changewith Endogenous Choice of Education

This article analyzes the impact of stochastic skill-biased technological change on earnings inequality in a general equilibrium OLG model. Wage dispersion is determined by the heterogeneity of skills by allowing for productivity differences due to education, ability, and age. The model performs well in reproducing stylized facts on the time pattern of the U.S. wage distribution and human capit...

A Model of Power-Biased Technological Change

New technologies have allowed …rms to monitor low-skill workers more closely, thus reducing the power of these workers. We show that this ’power-biased change’may generate rising wage inequality and increases in the work intensity and unemployment of low-skill workers. JEL numbers: J31, O33

Technological Change, Computerization, and the Wage Structure

This widening of the wage structure has coincided with the rapid computerization of the work place. Thus, it is not surprising that many labor market analysts have tried to draw a causal connection between rising earnings inequality and increases in growth rat...
